Brick is one of the most common construction materials due to its strength and durability. Conventional fired clay bricks have an adverse impact on the environment caused by a great amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the process of its firing. One of the environmentally friendly alternatives is sand-lime brick, made from natural raw stuff such as quartz sand, quicklime, and water. It ensures the creation of natural, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly construction materials, which contributes to the sustainable development of the construction industry. Sand-lime bricks are often used due to their soundproofing properties, a high heat retention, and fire resistance.
The raw stuff for sand-lime brick production includes quartz sand (92–95% of dry mix) and quicklime (5–8%). The basic requirement for increasing the strength of bricks involves the rate of silica (SiO₂) activation and the mixing uniformity of constituents.
In order to address this task, GlobeCore has developed an innovative technology for simultaneous activation of quartz sand and mixing of constituents during sand-lime brick production, which is implemented in AVS vortex layer machines.
The operation principle of AVS vortex layer machine is based on the use of an electromagnetic field for dry mix processing. A mix of constituents along with metal ferromagnetic particles are placed in the machine’s operating chamber. The chamber is surrounded by inductors that convert the AC energy into the variable magnetic field energy. This magnetic field has an effect on the ferromagnetic particles, causing them to move intensively and randomly inside the chamber. Intensive movement of ferromagnetic particles has a number of effects on the material processed: impact effect, abrasion, and cavitation. This allows for thorough mixing, as well as activation of constituents, which considerably increases the process efficiency.
Studies indicate that the ultimate strength of sand-lime bricks increases by 3.5 times after processing the constituents in a vortex layer of the AVS machine. Similar processing of lime-sand, lime-ash, and lime-silica mixes also results in considerable improvement of mechanical properties, which makes them promising for use in construction.
Therefore, the use of GlobeCore technology in sand-lime brick production allows producing a strong and durable construction material and reducing the harmful environmental impact that occurs during the brick firing process.
