Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the freedom of slaves in the United States.
The name Juneteenth is a mix of the words June and nineteenth.
Juneteenth is also called Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day
Juneteenth is a U.S holiday that celebrates the anniversary of June 19, 1865
The Emancipation Proclamation was published by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation was created to abolish slavery.
The Emancipation Proclamation finally went into effect on January 1, 1863.
Even though it was in effect, there were still More than 200,000 African Americans were still enslaved in Texas after the Emancipation Proclamation was created.
Furthermore, slaves were not freed in the Confederacy until the Union army came in and took over
It was On June 18, 1865, that the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas.
The following day, June 19th, General Gordon Granger declared that the slaves in Texas were free by order of the president of the United States.
This is why Juneteenth Day is a celebration of the day June 19th
