The dance: KOMPA
Nemour Jean Baptiste introduced Kompa music from Haiti in 1959, and Kizomba emerged in 1984, following the introduction of Kompa to Cape Verdeans and other African communities in Brooklyn, NY. Despite attempts to redefine the genre, it remains diverse with various styles such as Kompa Kekal, Kompa Direct, Kompa Melasse, Kompa Roussi, Kompa Gouyad, and Troubadou. The amalgamation of these Kompa styles eventually gave rise to the creation of Zouk.

In addition to being a dance style, Kompa is also a genre of music. The musical genre typically features a prominent use of the guitar, horn sections, and percussion instruments. The lyrics are usually in Haitian Creole or French.

Kompa dance is often performed in pairs, with dancers holding each other closely and moving in sync with the music. The dance style emphasizes a strong connection between partners, intricate footwork, and expressive movements. It's a social dance, often performed in social settings such as parties, clubs, and festivals.

The popularity of Kompa has spread beyond Haiti, and it has influenced other genres of music and dance in the Caribbean and beyond. The dance and music are integral parts of Haitian culture, providing a vibrant and energetic expression of the country's rich heritage.
