Talk from the Lennard-Jones Centre-CECAM Meeting 2025 by Prof. Ali Alavi from the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Germany.
With the advent of quantum mechanics in the late 1920’s, it soon became apparent that the subject of chemistry would be for ever changed by this (still-enigmatic) physical/mathematical theory. So a Theory group, lead by John Lennard-Jones, was set in the early 1930s in the chemistry department. Lennard-Jones contributed profoundly to the development of the new field, both through his own work, and through his doctoral students, who included Charles Coulson, Frank Boys and John Pople, to name but a few, and their PhD students... Ali Alavi will try to give a sense of the scientific background and work
of these early pioneers, and the lasting impact they had in shaping the subject, both in the UK and internationally.
The seminar was held on 3rd September 2025.
