Bret Hart vs Owen Hart at WWF WrestleMania X is considered by most to be the absolute greatest opener in WrestleMania history. In an effort to establish the younger Hart as a formidable heel in the WWF, the company decided to book Owen vs big brother Bret in the very first match at WrestleMania 10. The match received critical acclaim from fans and the wrestling media, solidifying Bret vs Owen as the best opening match to ever happen at WrestleMania.

The story of Bret vs Owen starts back at SummerSlam 1993 when Owen and Bruce Hart had to get in the ring to get Bret to release a sharpshooter on Jerry Lawler. Lawler had been saying some unsavoury things about the Hart family, and so the Hart brothers (along with Keith Hart) created a Survivor Series team that were scheduled to take on Jerry Lawler & his Knights at the Survivor Series 1993 PPV. Lawler was replaced by Shawn Michaels, but the finish remained intact... Owen Hart was the only person eliminated from the Hart Brothers and he was soon getting very jealous of big brother Bret.

The Owen vs Bret match was teased at the end of 1993 but it looked like the brothers had reunited in time for the 1994 Royal Rumble. Bret and Owen took on the Quebecers at the pay per view, but Owen attacked Bret after the match. Bret won the Royal Rumble later in the evening alongside Lex Luger, and so Bret and Luger would both get title shots at WrestleMania X. A coin toss decided who would face Yokozuna first, and because Luger won the coin toss, Bret would have to face Owen in the opening match of WrestleMania.
