This song is featured in episode 3x06 of "Turn: Washington's Spies". It plays at the end, when Peggy dances with Washington. I just caught up with the show and couldn't find the song anywhere so I made a cover :)
Originally, the song is from "The Beggar's Opera" from 1728, written by John Gay with music from Johann Christoph Pebusch (Act III, Scene III: http://www.gradesaver.com/the-beggars....
As far as I could find out, the cover that's featured in the show was sung by Sara Watkins. Since she's also a fiddler and the show version features a violin, I'm going to guess that's her as well.
So, this is a cover of a cover :D It's not completely identical: I've taken some leeway with the falalala's and I added the remaining lines from the original since the show version is so short. This is still short, anyway (in the show she only sings the first 2 lines but now it's 4 which isn't that much longer).
Anyway, I tried to do the picking pattern from the show version (by ear) and I'm not quite sure how close I got but it sounds fine to me.
LYRICS:
In the days of my youth I could bill like a dove, fa, la, la, &c.
Like a sparrow at all times was ready for love, fa, la, la, &c.
The life of all mortals in kissing should pass, fa, la, la, &c.
Lip to lip while we're young - then the lip to the glass, fa, la, &c.
CHORDS:
Am / Em / Am / Em (repeat ad nauseam)
PICKING PATTERN:
I tried to copy & paste it here but the tab looked very skewed. Basically for first Am you pick the 5th string as the base note, then the 4th string and then 3+2 simultaneously. For the Em you pick the 6th string (in the 3rd fret!) and then again 4 and then 3/2. And for the second Am you pick the 6th string (in the 1st fret!) and then 4 and then 3/2. The Em is always the same. Ehhh, hope this helps.
