प्रकृति के Catalysts | 24th August | Ep 7 - 3030 Eklavya
About the Episode
In this session, we’ll explore enzymes—tiny protein molecules that speed up life’s essential reactions. We’ll learn how they help us digest food, how they’re used in everyday products, and what factors like temperature and pH affect their activity. One of the highlights will be a hands-on experiment with catalase, an enzyme found in our cells that breaks down harmful hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Topics Covered
-What are enzymes and their functions
-How do enzymes help us digest food
-How enzymes are used in everyday products
-Factors affecting the activity of enzymes
Correction:
In our live session, we performed an experiment to study the effect of pH on catalase enzyme activity. To make the potato juice basic, we initially used baking soda. However, baking soda reacts with hydrogen peroxide and produces carbon dioxide gas. This can interfere with the results, since the foam observed may contain a mixture of oxygen (from the enzyme reaction) and carbon dioxide.
To avoid this problem, we recommend using another base such as calcium hydroxide. Unlike baking soda, calcium hydroxide does not react with hydrogen peroxide or release any gas, ensuring that the only gas produced comes from the catalase–hydrogen peroxide reaction. When we replaced baking soda with calcium hydroxide, the results remained the same as before, showing that catalase activity is highest under basic conditions. The key advantage is that calcium hydroxide eliminates any interference from unwanted gas formation, giving a clearer outcome
