Vatican can have a few different meanings:
The Vatican includes the buildings in Rome including the pope’s residence, St. Peter’s Basilica, museums, and other administrative buildings.
The Vatican refers to the government of the pope and offices that represent the Catholic Church.
Vatican City is the city-state within Rome that operates as an independent country.
So where does the name “Vatican” come from?
The Latin word “vaticanus” was the name of the hill where St. Peter’s Basilica and the buildings around it were built.
The word “vaticanus” itself comes from the word meaning “to prophecy.” The word and name of the hill pre-dates even Rome coming from the Etruscans.
The name really has a geographic origin, but it is a fitting original meaning.
Like the prophets in the Old Testament, the pope is the voice in the world calling us back to God. He is a voice of hope and faith in a world that needs it desperately.
