The Navy Wants To Buy 19 Ships This Year - Can It Actually Build Them?

The Navy is betting big on new ships in its fiscal year 2026 budget, requesting 19 be procured this year alone. This is a massive increase over previous years and underscores how far behind military leaders feel we are.

There is one major problem, though: we can barely build the ships we've ordered years ago. Major programs, such as the Virginia and Columbia class submarines, are years behind schedule, and costs are soaring.

Despite increased funding for shipbuilding, achieving a 350-ship navy seems less and less likely, so let's talk about it.
