Anghiari is located about 30 km from Arezzo, almost on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, in the so-called Tuscan Valtiberina. Anghiari is a small medieval jewel set on a gravel hill accumulated over the centuries due to the passage of the Tiber river, which until the mid-1200s flowed at the foot of the city.
Due to its strategic position, Anghiari played a very important role in the Middle Ages. In the plain just below the village in 1440 the famous Battle of Anghiari took place, in which the Florentine troops defeated the Milanese ones, thus allowing Florence to take over the government of the city. The famous fresco of the Battle of Anghiari by Leonardo da Vinci, unfortunately lost, was commissioned precisely to honor this victory.
Anghiari, with its characteristic village protected by imposing thirteenth-century walls, preserves the atmosphere and charm of small medieval towns intact.
Walking through the narrow streets of the village you can almost breathe an air of other times and the frenetic rhythms we are used to appear after a while almost a distant memory. The stone houses, overlooking the narrow streets of the city, have small windows, shutters and wooden doors, sometimes a little broken, but absolutely characteristic. The entrances and windowsills of the houses are often embellished with flowers and plants, which help to warm and color the alleys of Anghiari, making them even more graceful.

The city of Anghiari is considered one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and has obtained the Orange Flag from the Italian Touring Club. It is a "medieval treasure chest between the Tiber and the Arno" (as you can read on the website of the tourist office of the city) and if you are planning to visit Arezzo or this area of ​​Tuscany, we absolutely recommend that you include Anghiari among the stops. of your itinerary.
