Outfitter Tales: Deer stalking basics — range day, rifle safety & first shots (part 1)

Join us for part one of a relaxed, practical introduction to deer management and stalking — we stay on the range to cover the fundamentals before we head into the field. This video is perfect if you’re new to shooting or want a refresher: we walk through zeroing, safe handling, shooting positions, breathing and trigger control, and what “good” shot placement looks like (the heart/lung zone when a deer is broadside).

What we cover-
Why broadside (heart/lung) orientation matters and how to spot a shootable animal.
Zeroing & the range target we use (old DSC level 1 silhouette vs. the updated target).
Rifle safety: magazines vs floor plates, bolt checks and why we always leave bolts open.
How to get comfortable behind the rifle: prone position, cheek weld, support sticks and getting your sight line in.
Breathing, trigger squeeze and handling nerves — from dry-fire to live rounds.
A lovely clover-leaf grouping (yes, really) and why taking your time pays off.

Always follow your local laws, the Code of Practice and range/stalking safety procedures. This video is educational — if you’re new, train with a qualified instructor and practise regularly on the range before attempting any live stalking.
