"TMF HAKKEEHH!" was a television program on the Dutch channel TMF (The Music Factory). Broadcasted weekly in the mid-1990s, the program featured a compilation of the most recent and popular hardcore music, as well as (live) recordings from hardcore parties. This show played a significant role in introducing and popularizing the gabber subculture and hardcore music scene in the Netherlands, offering a platform for this genre to reach a wider audience and embedding it further into the youth culture of the time.Gabber is a Dutch subculture that emerged in the 1990s in Rotterdam from parties where gabberhouse music was played, a music style characterized by a fast rhythm. Gabbering, the way of dancing to gabber music, is also called "hakken" (chopping). The style originated in the early nineties. The genre was named in 1991 by Dutch house producer D-Shake, who played an early gabber track on a VPRO music program and said, "That is gabberhouse." Well-known gabber parties include Thunderdome and Masters of Hardcore.
Because gabberhouse was an important part of youth culture in its heyday, many participated in it. If you, as a gabber, wanted to indicate that someone did not fit into this world, you could call that person a "zwabber" (mop). In those times in the Netherlands, gabbers were often jokingly called Sjonnies and Anita's by the outside world, but this is no longer the case today.
Despite their recognizable clothing style and hairstyle, many gabbers believe that being a gabber is something that comes from within and not from the outside. A gabber is someone who loves the hard house styles and finds parties a very important element of life. The gabber culture is generally less politically involved than the techno scene.
