Devin Allen’s Baltimore: Protest, Portraits & Resilience | Picture America

This week on Picture America, we highlight Devin Allen, an award-winning Baltimore photographer. He creates powerful work in documentary photography, photojournalism, and street photography that reshapes the world's perception of his city.

Allen gained international recognition in 2015 when Time Magazine featured his photograph of the Baltimore uprising after Freddie Gray’s death on its cover. He continues to capture the realities of gun violence, protest movements, and the resilience of Baltimore’s Black community.

His new photobook, Devin Allen: Baltimore — winner of the 2023 Gordon Parks Foundation/Steidl Book Prize — presents over 100 photographs that span portraits, protest photography, and street scenes. The book delivers a decade-long visual narrative of Baltimore’s texture and truth.

Devin Allen gained national attention when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was published on the cover of TIME in May 2015, making him only the third amateur photographer to have his work featured in the publication. Devin’s photographs have been published in New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Aperture. His photography is also featured in permanent collections at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, the Jule Collins Smith Museum, and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
