Nolan Lem’s work has been featured internationally at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art Buenos Aires, Pioneer Works , L’HOSTE Art Contemporain , and the Danish National Museum of Music. He has participated in a number of residencies, including IRCAM, MassMoCA, Cité Internationale des Arts, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.
Nolan joins us to explore his fascinating work with interactive sound systems and sonic machinery. Drawing from his unique background in saxophone performance, electrical engineering, and computer music, Nolan shares how he creates immersive audio-visual environments that bring together technology, sound, and systems thinking. From his time at Stanford's CCRMA to his current research at Chalmers University, discover how Nolan's innovative approach is pushing the boundaries of contemporary sound art.

More aware of what the power spots are in hearing. Often inspired by just how something might sound. Kinda an inquiry into what’s a sounds’ potential. Cross-functional and cross-medium. Use of those tools. Perceptions of discrete elements. Pairs other perceptual modalities. Provides access to music. A whole big branch. The way it’s specialized around. Taking it from like a series to like a cloud. A component of that spectrum. Had to think a little bit differently. A quadraphonic setup. Designing things that move. Allowing the constraints to shape something. Stood the test of time. Better to analyze a lot of signals. The mentality shift. The primal scream into the anechoic chamber. An ear discovery. Sense like how internal sound is to just being. Opening up, putting the antenna up. More aware of what the power spots are in hearing. Find the ideal value. Weird kinda long triangular like foam absorbent cone things. Like little just differences. The way it’s specialized around. Some of the coolest outcomes. Designing things that make sound and interacting with them. Clouds of objects. Form different auditory textures. All of these things, it compounds, when you have more speakers. Like a wonderful culture and everything. New avenues as to what music can even be. The networks of sonic machinery. Hooked into that world. 🗜
