Out of ideas? What should I paint?

This BobBlast features one of my go-to exercises when I go to my studio with no clue what to do… Jumpstart Abstract paintings.

This exercise inspires fresh and new directions for me every time when I am out of ideas or just… you know, blah.

In your studio, if you are like me - you probably have paint and paper scraps full of paint, or paper towels covered in paint. I save all this stuff for my collages OR use a cropping mat to "find" another painting.

It's that simple - I will lay a mat on top of an abstract painting, a painting in progress, a paper towel, my palette - looking for inspiration - I will search all over the surface while looking for a unique color combination and composition. I use that "found painting" as inspiration. I will paint what I have found on another, larger surface. I am NOT going to try to recreate exactly that "found painting" - that kind of defeats the purpose. I use it as a jumping off point to jumpstart a new painting.

It really helps me to use a mat with the same format as the painting I want to do. Example - Square, Vertical or Horizontal.

Not a lot of thought behind this beginning, but it can get you started when you just feel so … blank. It's a sure fire way to jumpstart your next abstract painting!
