Adam Webster - By This Abiding Light for Euphonium Quartet (2020)

Program Note: By This Abiding Light was commissioned during my first year at the Royal Northern College of Music by my fellow student and baritone horn player, Amy Ewen.

When I was thinking about how to approach this piece, I knew that I wanted to write something that showcased the wonderful singing quality of the baritone horn. I found the warmness of the instrument's tone (especially in the upper register) very inspiring, and I thought it would lend itself well to a piece that was decidedly melody-driven and reflective in character.

Amy premiered the piece during her final postgraduate recital of 2021, where she performed the 1st baritone part live in the RNCM concert hall alongside three pre-recorded versions of herself playing the other parts. I have found in subsequent performances that the piece works just as well with euphoniums, so I have decided to specify their optional use in the score.

This is a simple piece which I hope provides for the listener a moment to reflect on past times and to look forward to the light of the coming day.
