Here’s why you shouldn’t buy a 2021-2024 GMC Vehicle with the L87 6.2 liter V8….
General Motors (GM) has issued a significant recall affecting nearly 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to potential engine issues. The recall targets 2021–2024 models equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8 gasoline engine, including:
• Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
• Chevrolet Silverado 1500
• Chevrolet Suburban
• Chevrolet Tahoe
• GMC Sierra 1500
• GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
The issue stems from potential manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and crankshaft components, which could lead to engine damage or failure. GM has reported 12 crashes and 12 injuries in the U.S. that may be related to this defect. Dealers will inspect the engines and perform necessary repairs or replacements. For vehicles that pass inspection, GM will provide higher viscosity oil along with a new oil cap and filter .
Additionally, GM is addressing a separate issue involving oversized lifter bores in some 2023 models with the same L87 engine. This defect can lead to premature wear and eventual engine failure. Affected vehicles require complete engine replacement before they can be sold .
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has also opened an investigation into approximately 877,000 GM vehicles from model years 2019 to 2024 equipped with the L87 V8 engine. The probe follows 39 complaints of engine failures due to bearing issues, which can cause the engine to seize or suffer catastrophic damage without prior warning .
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their local GM dealership for inspection and necessary repairs. For more information, you can check your vehicle’s identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or contact GM customer service.
