Entrepreneurship is often presented as the future of work for African youth - but rarely examined as a labour condition.
In this video essay, I reflect on conversations sparked at the G20 Youth Summit in South Africa, and on my observations in Ghana, to question whether entrepreneurship is being positioned as a genuine pathway to prosperity - or as a substitute for secure jobs, labour protections, and economic policy.
We talk about:
• Entrepreneurship in Africa vs employment and labour rights
• Social capital, access to capital and what we don’t see online
• Why entrepreneurship is often promoted without supporting systems
• Different expectations placed on African youth compared to the Global North
• What it really means to “thrive,” not just survive
This video is for anyone thinking critically about work, development, youth futures and economic narratives in Africa.
Join the conversation in the comments - I’d love to hear your perspective 🤍.
