Time lapse of the conversion of a 4EAT with VTD from a JDM 2000 Subaru Outback H6 to work in my SF Forester and also upgrading to a subarugears LSD.
I am building up my SF Forester to do some remote overlanding, and wanted a more reliable transmission with VTD and an LSD.
I could have sourced a VTD tail section, rebuilt my transmission, and installed an LSD. But VTD tail sections by themselves are kinda hard to come by. WRX with autos in local yards are beyond trashed. I was essentially stuck with having to buy a whole transmission anyways.
A 4EAT out of a JDM 2000 Subaru Outback with an H6 popped up on eBay, only ~60,000mi on it. Great, it doesn't need to be rebuilt and has the coveted VTD.
Problem is that they are not initially compatible with Foresters for a couple of reasons:
1. Foresters have 4.44 diff gears vs 4.11 in the Outback.
2. 1st and 2nd gears in the Outback are a taller ratio than the Forester. Which would result in weird shift points when paired with the Forester ECU/TCU. Also, that gearing doesn't pair well with the lesser amount of power from a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder.
So to get this to work, I've gotta transfer the 4.44 ring and pinion, and the 1st and 2nd gear assembly. While I'm there I'll install the LSD.
For the Subie nerds that noticed it, yes my donor transmission is from an '03 SG Forester. I'm going to use the newer style, non-stud-shaft axles.
