A massive fire broke out late on the night of January 17, 2026 at the Gul Plaza shopping mall on MA Jinnah Road in Saddar, Karachi — a multi‑storey complex with about 1,200 shops.
The blaze spread rapidly due to highly flammable merchandise like garments, plastics and carpets, and poor fire safety infrastructure inside the building. Many exits were reportedly locked or inaccessible, trapping people inside.
Firefighters battled the inferno for more than 24–34 hours before it was largely brought under control.
