STORYLINE:
The leader of the Hezbollah militant Islamic group on Thursday warned that a US-led attack on Iraq would be met with weapons, blood and suicide attacks.
Speaking at a rally in southern Beirut, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah warned that any future Israeli invasion of Lebanon, or a US-led attack on Iraq would be met with fierce resistance.
More than half a million Hezbollah supporters marched through Beirut to the rally, held on the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Shi'ite Imam Husain, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed, at Karbala in modern-day Iraq in 680 C.E.
Hezbollah (Arabic = Party of God), a Shi'ite group backed by Iran and Syria, led a guerrilla war against Israel's 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon that ended in May 2000.
The group rejects a Jewish state in the Middle East, and features on a US list of terrorist organisations.
Nearly 300-thousand US forces are in the Gulf region, along with tens of thousands of British troops, preparing for war against Iraq, which Washington accuses of possessing weapons of mass destruction. Iraq has denied it has prohibited weapons.
