Sundiata Keita (c. 1217–1255) was the founder of the Mali Empire, remembered through the oral traditions of West African griots as the “Lion King.” Despite early struggles with disability and exile, he returned to lead his people against the sorcerer-king Soumaoro Kanté, defeating him at the Battle of Kirina. Under his rule, Mali became one of the most powerful and prosperous empires in African history, laying the foundation for its golden age under later rulers like Mansa Musa. His story remains a cornerstone of African epic tradition, symbolizing resilience, unity, and destiny fulfilled.
