#ALDI vs. #LIDL – What’s the Difference?
ALDI or LIDL? Two of the biggest discount grocery stores in the world — both known for low prices, no-frills shopping, and fast checkouts. But are they really the same?
In this video, we’ll break down the key similarities and differences between ALDI and LIDL so you know exactly what sets them apart — and which one might be better for you.
Section 1: Origins and History
Let’s start with where they came from.
ALDI was founded in 1946 in Germany by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht. In 1960, the company split into two parts: ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd. ALDI Süd is the version most Americans know — and it’s the one that owns Trader Joe’s in the U.S.
LIDL, also a German company, was founded in 1973 by Dieter Schwarz. It came after ALDI but quickly became a global competitor.
Today, both are giants in the discount grocery world, each operating over 11,000 stores across Europe and beyond.
Section 2: What ALDI and LIDL Have in Common
While they’re technically competitors, ALDI and LIDL have a lot in common:
Both focus on low prices and high efficiency.
They mostly sell private-label or exclusive brands, which keeps costs down.
Their stores are small, with limited selection to encourage quick shopping.
Both use a bring-your-own-bag or pay-for-bag system.
They’re known for fast checkouts, thanks to smart packaging and barcode placement.
They both offer weekly rotating “special buys” — usually non-food items at a discount.
If you’ve been in one, the overall shopping experience will feel very familiar in the other.
Section 3: The Key Differences
Now, let’s talk about how ALDI and LIDL are different.
First, store design. ALDI stores are more utilitarian and minimalist. LIDL stores are often more modern, brighter, and feel a bit more like a traditional supermarket.
Next, the bakery. Most LIDL stores have a full in-store bakery with fresh bread and pastries. ALDI has bakeries in some locations, but it’s not a standard feature.
LIDL also has a digital loyalty app called Lidl Plus. It offers weekly coupons, digital receipts, and other perks. ALDI doesn’t have a loyalty app or digital rewards system in most countries.
When it comes to online shopping, ALDI in the U.S. partners with Instacart for grocery delivery. LIDL is expanding online services more aggressively, especially in Europe.
Ownership is another difference. ALDI is split into two branches — Nord and Süd — with different territories around the world. LIDL, on the other hand, is owned by the Schwarz Group and operates under a single unified structure.
Lastly, LIDL entered the U.S. market in 2017. ALDI has been in the U.S. since 1976, giving it a stronger foothold and more stores — for now.
Section 4: Global Reach
Globally, both ALDI and LIDL have a massive presence.
ALDI has over 12,000 stores in more than 20 countries.
LIDL operates over 11,000 stores in about 30 countries.
Depending on where you live, you might see more of one than the other, but both continue to expand rapidly.
Section 5: Quick Recap
Here’s a quick recap of the main differences:
ALDI was founded earlier and owns Trader Joe’s.
LIDL stores feel more modern and typically have fresh bakeries.
LIDL offers a loyalty app with coupons. ALDI doesn’t.
ALDI uses Instacart in the U.S.; LIDL is expanding online in Europe.
ALDI is split into Nord and Süd; LIDL has a single structure.
LIDL entered the U.S. more recently but is growing fast.
