Scott Henderson Lydian Dominant Lick

The Lydian Dominant is a cool scale to use over a Dominant 7 chord. The Mixolydian mode is the one that logically fits used over such a chord. That is because it is the 5th mode of the major scale, and that chord is the 5th chord of the major scale.

The difference between the Lydian Dominant and the Mixolydian mode is only one note - the 4th scale degree is raised a half-step in the former. It is also not a mode, like the Mixolydian. I think of it as a different “flavour” of a Dominant 7 scale, and it’s useful to be able to use it in once in a while for a really colourful sound. Even though it’s only one note apart from the Mixolydian, you can make it sound very different.

The line I’m showing you here is an idea I picked up from Scott Henderson. I have simplified it, because he plays in a way more advanced style, using his whammy bar and more slurs, etc.
