Countless hours of field time, dozens of boot miles racked up, and very few birds to show for my efforts have been the story so far. Despite having an incredibly unsuccessful time getting myself into birds this season, the thrill of one of these Chucklebusters flushing from at my feet is something that no other game bird can come close to providing. Sometimes it results in a sort of stunned awe as I gaze at the rapidly escaping target without thought of mounting my shotgun. Other times, a mindless flail of the barrel and a clean miss. Yet occasionally, an incredibly rewarding puff of feathers and a rooster in the bag. This was my introduction to Southwest Montana Pheasant hunting. Each flush came at the cost of many miles and sometimes multiple trips to the field, yet offered no warning, and provided only a split second window of opportunity to make it all count. Persistence was the name of the game here.
