Art Tip - Seal Watercolor Paintings with Dorland's Wax 🎨

I find it is important to seal my watercolor paintings on rice paper before mounting them to a stiffer paper backing. A spray fixative can be used to seal the artwork, but I prefer to use Jacquard's Dorland's Wax medium.

I use a smooth soft cloth to apply the Dorland's Wax and also use the same type of cloth to buff the waxed surface after it has a chance to cure overnight. My favorite are old 100% cotton sheets and pillow cases, but t-shirt rags would also work well for this task.

Sometimes when rubbing on the Dorland's Wax, you may notice color from the artwork lifting and coming onto the application cloth. I watch carefully for this and wipe off the lifted color from the cloth onto a paper towel before continuing to apply the wax. This helps to assure that I do not spread the lifted color to other areas of my artwork.

You can apply Dorland's Wax to watercolor artworks on any surface including wood, fabric and paper. Note that when you apply this Dorland's Wax sealer on your watercolors, the colors, and possibly also the surface on which they are painted, may darken a little after treatment.
