#exploring the #abandoned RAF Down Ampney with very interesting #history. Not much is left of the old base but what has been left is interesting to see.
The control tower is long gone as the hangers, the runways are mainly intact as other Structures.
The base played a huge role in D-Day and Market Garden.
The base was built two yrs after RAF Brize Norton but was more active during the war yrs.
The base was active from February 1944 - February 1947. The base was home to some 3,000 personnel.
It was from here that RAF 48 and 271 Squadrons Douglas Dakotas on major missions.
