HOUSE MUSIC LEGENDS Moodymann (KDJ Records, Detroit)

This 74-minute tribute to the genius of Kenny Dixon Jr. — better known as Moodymann – Is a dedication to the Artist who introduced me the deepest House and Techno sounds of Detroit. I had already been trained tο the style of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Jeff Mills, but Moodymann and his album “silentintroduction” from PLANET E, blending deep house, soul, funk, jazz and Detroit grit at the tunes, dropped like a bomb back in 1997.

More than just tracks, Moodymann creates stories — about love, struggle, freedom, and the dancefloor.

Tunes 1 to 4 is a oblation to some great vocals gems of Moody, ending with the blissful “doin fine” featuring the vicious Amp Dog Knight. The "it's 2 late 4 u and me" video is a oblation to Tokyo and 2 of my favourite movies about human loneliness, "Lost in translation" by Sofia Copolla and "Perfect Days" by Wim Wenders.

Track 5 is the stunning “I got werk” from his “Why Do U Feel” EP which acts as a passage to tracks 6 to 8 and Moody’s dark and disco side, including the classic “Chic – I want your love” sampling in his “I can’t kick this feeling when it hits” tune. "Forevernvermore" video is dedicated to Detroit riots of 1967.

Tracks 9 and 10 share the same bassline, so I treated them as a family. “LiveInLA” is a true banger and “JAN” works as the perfect bridge to pass from Moody's techy side back to his soulful forms.

Tracks 11 to 15 is a dedication to his jazzy and deep music approach, including the magnificent remix of Norma’s Jean Bell vocal gem titled “I'm The Baddest Bitch (In The Room)”, followed by his Classic “ Freeki Mutha F cker”. “Technologystolemyvinyl” is a masterpiece which perfectly blends jazz and tech.

Kenny Dixon Jr (aka Moodymann) is one of Detroit’s finest and one of house music’s most important voices. Enjoy the ride into his sounds.
