STORYLINE:
Visitors flocked to Beijing temples on Saturday as they marked Lunar New Year's Day with prayers for a smooth year ahead in 2024.

Throngs of people burned incense and bowed in front of Buddhas at Lama Temple, an iconic Tibetan Buddhist site in east Beijing.

Many believe the custom brings good fortune for the new year and visit temples with family.

Around fifty thousand visits are usually paid on the first day of the Lunar New Year to Lama Temple, according to the temple authority.

The Lunar New Year is the most important annual holiday in China, a time for reunions with relatives and friends and to enjoy festive feasts.

Each year is named after one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac, with this year being the Year of the Dragon — widely considered the most auspicious zodiac sign in Chinese communities.
