Dr. Ahmed Samatar is the James Wallce Professor of International Studies at Macalester College and expert on the Somali condition. In his presentation to the University of St. Thomas, he describes with great knowledge the confluence of crises that have led Somalia into what he describes as a catastrophic state. These include the destruction of Telos, the destruction of national institutions, the absence of effective leadership, and international military intervention. He concludes with lessons the international community can learn from studying the Somali condition, one of them being: "Hope is the key to the future."
