Why Did Hideo Rewrite the Ending of MGS4?

Metal Gear Solid 4 almost had an ending so bleak it would have shocked the entire fanbase. Did you know Snake and Otacon almost were written to be executed in the end of the game? This was Hideo Kojima’s original plan, but it never made it into the final game. For years, some fans have pointed to Ryan Payton as the reason for the change, claiming he “westernized” the ending.
