Hill climbs are the bane for many cyclists. Cycling in Taiwan is full of tough climbs, and the most famous among them is Wuling, a goal for many cyclists worldwide. See how our group tackles the challenges that await in this episode of Pedal On.
Taiwan exists at the meeting of the Eurasian tectonic plate and the Philippine Sea plate, creating an island of mountains. This makes Taiwan a unique place in terms of biodiversity and stunning vistas, as well as offering a variety of unique experiences at high altitudes. Many of Taiwan’s mountains are over 3,000 meters high, providing challenging climbs for anyone who wishes to attempt them. For cyclists, Taiwan’s extensive and well-maintained mountain road system allows for some exceptional cycling experiences on this small island. Wuling is the highest point on Taiwan’s roads and is a holy grail for cycling enthusiasts. Regarded as the second hardest cycling climb in the world, it is a challenge every cyclist must try once in their lifetime.
We pick back up with our cyclists as they make their way through the Lanyang plains in scenic Yilan County. This gently undulating route is a warm-up for the upcoming hill climbs. As they make their way to Nanshan Village our group has pedaled to a slightly higher elevation through areas famous for produce. Here they get to experience another side of Taiwan’s stunning landscapes before they start the first grueling climb to Siyuan Pass. Today’s cycling ends at the Wuling Farm guesthouse.
The next day the ride starts early, as the cyclists gear up for what promises to be a challenging ride ahead. Today the cyclists will tackle Taiwan’s Wuling. The day starts with some easy riding, some stunning views and taking in the Atayal Indigenous culture of the “Mountain Ring Villages.” Next they pedal their way to the Lishan Guesthouse, located at 1,956 meters above sea level, a unique building with remarkable traditional architecture. The next stop on their journey is Dayuling, the start of the attempt at the grueling climb to Wuling. Once the riders achieve the ultimate goal, they make their way towards Puli in Nantou County.
In this episode, find out why cyclists from Taiwan and around the world love this route so much, discover some surprising attempts at the central mountain challenge, and find out how our group fares when they attempt Taiwan’s Wuling, the Holy Grail of cycling in Taiwan.
