Tried to show a comparison of the flooded C&O across from Harpers Ferry earlier this year (May 15, 2025) and a normal dry condition. Notice where the canal wall drops off and Lock 33 there. It's not visible when flooded. The hiker was a few feet from the edge that day. Outcome could have been much different. Don't tread through a flooded towpath.
Joe Saverino was with me that day initiating 911 call and guiding Sergio (we found out is his name). He's a lucky man to have had us there that day. That current was raging and would have swept him into the water over his head. Plus water that cold makes muscles not work. He really could have drowned. Plus all the mud being deposited into the canal dropoff.
[The tree was the edge, a few steps away.]
I still think about that day. I do think God had us there at that moment. You can hear Joe yelling down to Sergio. The water noise is deafening.
And I'm sure he didn't know the pedestrian bridge (Appalachian Trail) gate was closed/locked probably the night before at 16ft.
The current rages and water frigid cold.
Water ripped up the surface depositing tons of mud/silt in the canal. NPS restored the entire towpath quite well.
Have a look at this video.
A look at the towpath (20 feet) flooded and recently in normal conditions.
