An exploration of the difference between institutional racism and interpersonal racism--taking the U.S. as an example. Suggests that many people, including white, black, brown, and red conservatives, get deeply confused about the difference between these two related but different forms of racism.
Argues that the complete eradication of institutional racism under conditions of capitalism (even in a capitalist democracy) is simply not possible given the societal functions institutional racism performs connected with the exploitation of the marginalized--which began on a large scale with the era of the Atlantic slave trade and continuing all the way through to the present. On the other hand, when it comes to INTERPERSONAL racism, that is racist discrimination at the individual level, it is possible to erase it (depending upon chance and circumstance); and thereby create for those involved what may be called "spaces of racial respite."
