1968 - San Francisco - California - US - West Coast - North America - 8mm - Hills - Golden Gate

When you think of the west coast of the United States of America, you think of San Francisco. And whoever travels to the Pacific Ocean in the west of the United States cannot miss the Californian metropolis. This film was made in 1968 as part of a world tour that is captured on a total of three film rolls. We found this at a street market in Vienna and digitized and slightly optimized the great Super 8 material.

With around 900,000 inhabitants, San Francisco is only the fourth largest city in the US state of California. But the historical and sentimental importance of the city goes beyond size and population. It is located on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula at the end of the bay. The almost square urban area is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Golden Gate to the north and the bay to the east.

San Francisco is famous for its 42 hills. The city has a large, right-angled road network. In the older, northeastern parts of the city, this leads to steep stretches of road, which Andrew Smith Hallidie developed cable cars to overcome around 1870. A turning maneuver carried out by hand by several men can be seen nicely in the film.

San Francisco is one of the most important port cities on the west coast. The city achieved this importance through the natural harbor protected by the sea. The prison island of Alcatraz, which has only served as a museum since 1963, is located in the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge over the opening to the Bay of San Francisco, designed by Joseph B. Strauss, is world-famous and can be seen in the film during a wonderful crossing. The bridge is 2.8 kilometers long and 25 meters wide. The pylons are 227 meters high. The bridge was completed in 1937.

Wer an die Westküste der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika denkt, der denkt an San Francisco. Und wer dann in den Westen der USA an den Pazifischen Ozean reist, der darf die kalifornische Metropole nicht auslassen. Dieser Film entstand im Jahr 1968 im Rahmen einer Weltreise, die auf insgesamt drei Filmrollen festgehalten ist. Diese haben wir auf einem Flohmarkt in Wien gefunden und das großartige Super 8 Material digitalisiert bzw. leicht optimiert.

Mit rund 900.000 Einwohnern ist San Francisco nur die viertgrößte Stadt des US-Bundestaates Kalifornien. Doch die geschichtliche und sentimentale Bedeutung der Stadt geht über Größe und Einwohnerzahl hinaus. Sie liegt an der nördlichen Spitze der San-Francisco-Halbinsel am Ende der Bucht. Das nahezu quadratische Stadtgebiet wird im Westen vom Pazifik, im Norden vom Golden Gate und im Osten von der Bucht begrenzt.

San Francisco ist berühmt für seine 42 Hügel. Die Stadt besitzt ein großräumig rechtwinkeliges Straßennetz. Das führt in den älteren, nordöstlichen Stadtteilen zu steilen Straßenabschnitten, zu deren Überwindung Andrew Smith Hallidie um 1870 die Cable Cars entwickelte. Im Film ist ein von mehreren Männern händisch durchgeführtes Wendemanöver schön zu sehen.

San Francisco ist eine der bedeutendsten Hafenstädte an der Westküste. Diese Bedeutung erlangte die Stadt durch den vom Meer geschützten Naturhafen. In der Bucht liegt die seit 1963 nur noch als Museum dienende Gefängnisinsel Alcatraz. Weltberühmt und bei einer herrlichen Überfahrt im Film zu sehen ist die von Joseph B. Strauss konstruierte Golden Gate Bridge über die Öffnung zur Bucht von San Francisco. Die Brücke ist 2,8 Kilometer lang und 25 Meter breit. Die Pylone sind 227 Meter hoch. Die Brücke wurde 1937 fertiggestellt.
