Inspired by the 11th-century French poem of the same name, this piece was my first exploration into more "violent" and "ugly" territories within music. Though I did not include a program, my rough concept of what each movement of this work as it pertains to the poem is as follows:
I. Murmerings of the Franks and Saracens
II. The death of Oliver
III. The death of Roland
IV. Lament after the battle
