Litani In Atlanta – A Landmark in Norwegian Music History
Composed by Gunnar Sønstevold
in 1972, Litani In Atlanta is based on the words of W.E.B. Du Bois
written after the 1906 Atlanta race riots.
First performed at the Festival of North Norway, the work brought together nearly 150 musicians—choirs, orchestras, jazz ensembles, and soloists including Odd-Arne Jacobsen, Terje Bjørklund (piano), and Bjørn Alterhaug (bass). The narration was delivered by Eva Møller.
For Jacobsen, the performance marked a turning point—an artistic leap from guitar soloist to a member of a powerful collective expression.
The work bridges voices across time and place, all connecting to W.E.B Du Bois:
Gunnar Sønstevold
Anne Brown
Knut Nystedt
Martin Luther King Jr.
and Louis Armstrong
—showing how music can give voice to the struggle for justice.
Litani In Atlanta endures as a powerful reminder of collaboration, memory, and the unifying strength of art.
