Join us as we dive the World War II wreck of the SS James Egan Layne. Diving with Aquanauts Dive Centre in Plymouth we head out to sea on their boat Outcast to what is probably my favourite wreck so far.
Torpedoed by the German submarine U-399 on 21st March 1944 she was towed and beached at Whitsand bay. Unable to be recovered the wreck now lies in 22m of water and forms an artificial reef on a sandy bottom.
We were treated to great visibility and plenty of ambient light which lit the wreck perfectly displaying its skeletal remains. Ribs of the ship stick up from the sea bed providing plenty of cover for the marine life and excellent swim throughs to explore. Much of the ships cargo still lies piled up on the floor and in the holds.
