Envisioning yourself on a glacier and seeing something come out of the melted ice. It wasn't a rock or a fossil; it was the face of a creature that lived tens of thousands of years ago. When the world's permafrost and ice sheets started to melt a few decades ago, scientists found animals that were so well preserved it looks like they could breathe again at any time. They found mammoths with blood still flowing through their veins, rhinos with fur and organs still intact, lions frozen in the middle of a hunt, and bears curled up as if they were still dreaming during the Ice Age. The animals that are no longer alive that we found frozen in glaciers are proof of a lost world where life and death met under the snow and time stopped.
