HAND DRAWN CGI: Animating the Terrahawks Title Sequence (Kevin Davies & Gerry Anderson Documentary)

The striking opening an closing titles of Gerry Anderson and Christopher Burr's Terrahawks bookended thrilling adventures for a generation of 1980s television viewers with their futuristic computer graphics. Except they weren't really computer graphics... in this behind the scenes documentary Kevin Jon Davies reveals the traditional but complex animation techniques he used to bring these well-remembered credits to life.

Kevin Davies is a filmmaker, animator, and writer who best known work includes Doctor Who: More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and 42: the wildly improbable ideas of Douglas Adams.

Terrahawks, was a 1983 Supermacromation British science fiction television show produced by Anderson Burr Pictures for London Weekend Television. The series was Anderson's first in over a decade to use puppets for its characters, and also his last. It differed from previous Supermarionation efforts like Supercar, Stringray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet in that it made use of sophisticated glove puppets rather than marionettes.

The series followed the adventures of the Terrahawks, a taskforce responsible for protecting Earth from invasion by a group of extraterrestrial androids and aliens led by the hideous Zelda of Guk.

In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services.
