Chhath Puja: An Ancient Festival Honoring Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya 🌞🙏

Chhath Puja, a revered Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (believed to be Surya’s sister), holds special significance in Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal. Unique among Vedic celebrations, it is the only festival solely devoted to the Sun God—the source of life, light, and energy. Worshipping Surya and Chhathi Maiya, also known as Goddess Usha in Vedic texts, symbolizes a deep gratitude for well-being, development, and prosperity.

For four days, devotees, known as Vrati, offer thanks to the Sun God, with the main ritual, Surya Shashthi, observed on the final day. This year, Chhath Puja will be celebrated from October 31st to November 3rd, with Surya Shashthi on November 3rd, 2019.

Why the name "Chhath"?
The term "Chhath" means six in Nepali and Hindi, as this festival takes place on the sixth day of the Karthika month.
