This is an in-depth history detailing how Whelen moved strobe power supplies out of the large metal bases of beacons and fit them under the dome. Originally strobe beacons were either remote powered or the power supply sat beneath the light raising the profile of the beacon significantly. In the late 1970s Whelen managed to fit the power supply under the dome and reduce the base height to almost nothing. They called these Junior Strobes, or the 800 series. This model ran from the late 70s until the mid 20-teens with several dome and internal board changes. This video walks through all those updates and explains what each change and the overall product meant to the industry.
