I'm embarrassed that I did a PhD

This is the story of how I ended up doing a PhD, even though I never dreamed of being a professor, or doing research, or to be honest, following any of the life paths a PhD provides. I did dream, though, of living in London, and grad school in the UK allowed me to do just that. What it also allowed me to find (unexpectedly) was an incredible level of autonomy and freedom in the ways I spent my time — until it ended, and I entered the world of work. Did I make a huge mistake? Or did I actually, for a miraculous few years, crack the code of the ideal life?
