Maqoma was born in 1798 in (ixesi) eastern cape, his father was king Ngqika of the Rharhabe the right hand house of the Xhosa nation and his mother was Nothonto.
Maqoma was the 1st born son but didn't qualify to become king because his mother didn't come from a royal house, maqoma was born during the time of conflict in South Africa between the Xhosa people and the British colonial forces and other rival kingdoms.
He grew up and became a skilled military strategist and warrior famously know for his leadership during the Xhosa wars.
his legacy is primarily associated with resistant efforts during these wars. the wars he took part in(the battle of amalinde,imfazwe ka xoxo, the Hintsa war,the war of mlanjeni)
During the time that Maqoma was the commander of his army, the British changed commanders 22 times, he also refused to kill his cattle during the cattle killing of Nongqawose.
Maqoma was then captured and burnished to Robin Island for 21years, released in 1869 bt sent back in 1871 for incitement.
Maqoma died in Robin Island in 1873 at the age of 75.
