Le Morne Brabant Mauritius - Le Morne mountain is located on the South-Western tip of Mauritius. This is an impressive rocky monolith of 556 metres high facing the ocean. The coastal road that encircles the foot of the mountain leads to an area of beautiful sandy beaches and high-class hotel resorts. Le Morne mountain is home to a rich diversity of plants of which some are rare endemic species, such as the Trochetia flower which the national flower of Mauritius.
The mountain has been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2008 and is also known as Le Morne Cultural Landscape. In the 18th and 19th century, runaway slaves (maroons) found a safe haven on the unreachable slopes of the mountain
The tragic legend of the mountain tells about colonial officers climbing the mountain to announce the runaway slaves about their newly won freedom following the abolition of slavery, some of the awestruck maroon slaves thought they were going to be captured and threw themselves from the top of the mountain.
