The Work of Felix Candela - Juan Ignacio del Cueto

Felix Candela was an architect and engineer who gained a worldwide reputation with the extraordinary concrete structures he designed. These revolutionary structures constructed in Mexico and other parts of the globe became popularly known as "shells" and were mainly built during the fifties and sixties, transforming the way in which reinforced concrete was understood and applied to construction. Del Cuerto will provide an insightful overview of Candela's work and revisit the context in which these buildings were created, reviewing the process of their creation.

Juan Ignacio Del Cueto is a professor at the School of Architecture and a senior researcher at the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Research Center at the National University of Mexico (UNAM). His recent work focused on the exhibition Felix Candela 1910-2010 and book publication of That Creative Spring: Reinforced Concrete Shells in Mexico.

This lecture is part of the Global Practices in Architecture Lecture Series, which focuses on current work by notable architects from around the world. The series is funded by the Cass Gilbert Lecture Fund.
