The Umpqua River Lighthouse is a historic and active lighthouse located on the Oregon Coast, near the mouth of the Umpqua River at Winchester Bay. The current lighthouse, first lit in 1894, is a 65-foot-tall conical tower made of brick and stucco and is known for its distinctive light signature: two white flashes followed by a single red flash. This unique signal is created by its First-Order Fresnel lens, a massive, two-ton lens handcrafted in Paris, France.
This is the second lighthouse to stand at this location. The original, built in 1857, was Oregon's first coastal lighthouse but was built on unstable ground and collapsed due to flooding and erosion in 1863. The current structure was built on a more stable site, 100 feet above sea level, and was automated in 1966.
The lighthouse is a popular tourist destination, offering tours where visitors can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views. It is located within Umpqua Lighthouse State Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
