In this episode, hosts Dhanya Rajendran, Pooja Prasanna and Leena Reghunath are joined by feature filmmaker Don Palathara, senior sports journalist Sharda Ugra and social media influencer Aysha Mahmood. The panel discusses two issues: growing violence in Kerala, and increasing influence of hyper-nationalism on Indian cricket.
The panel first discusses uptick in violent crimes in Kerala, and how the state is debating whether movies, drugs, or the internet were driving the youngsters involved in these incidents.
Don Palathara cautions against blaming any single medium, including cinema. He argues that cinema does not dictate behaviour, but is only a reflection of the society.
Aysha Mahmood believes that technology does impact people’s behaviour, particularly in children. “Our brain has been rewired to seek instant justice, instant dopamine hits, and instant gratification,” she asserts.
The conversation then shifts to the power BCCI wields over cricket, and the rising wave of hyper-nationalism in the sport. Speaking of the “deliberate amplification of nationalism” in Indian cricket, Sharda Ugra says, “This kind of jingoism has been amplified by the government at the centre, and by the broadcasters”.
Tune in for an in-depth discussion.
