Colonialism Wasn't Profitable - How History Works

These were vast empires that traded the world’s finest commodities and gave birth to the first multinational corporations.

Well despite what you may have read, Historians agree that most colonies with very few exceptions actually lost money for the kingdoms holding them.

The European empires that controlled these distant lands certainly didn’t do it out of charity, the conditions of the people that were colonized were probably the furthest thing from charitable.

It’s not like this was a failed business idea either. Colonialism dominated the world in one form or another for 600 years, so if it really was a losing idea the empires pursuing it had plenty of time to back out and focus on things that actually would make them wealthy.

So why then did they continue in a business that lost them money, while bringing untold misery to millions?
