Prof. Sanjeev Goyal, a Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge, discusses a major line of new research that he is working on: developing a conceptual framework to look at multi-layer #networks.
Instead of looking at only one network at a time, such as a friendship or family network or indeed supply chains, his research considers how several different networks work together at the same time. The aim is to analyse, both theoretically and empirically, how interacting networks shape us and our behaviour as well as how these multi-layered networks are formed.
Once developed, hopefully the conceptual framework can be applied towards a better understanding of practical problems such as understanding notions of identity, how networks shape our attitudes and values, especially in terms of trust, and how they affect political order.
Another aim is to study international relations, international conflict and look at how things such as trading relationships, geographical proximity, supply chains, and political alliances shape decisions and high-level outcomes.
